Are you ready to help your child get the education and skills they really need to succeed in life?

We all want our children to get a great education and develop the skills needed to become a resilient, capable, happy adult.

I want my own children to be able to tackle problems that inevitable come up, pursue their dreams and carve out a good life for themselves - don’t you?

But what most of us are doing to help our children get there isn’t working anymore:

The nature of work is changing in our modern age, college is no longer a guarantee of success, and formal education isn’t changing fast enough to help kids in school right now.

  • 7-12th grades have become a complicated, stressful 6-year college entrance exercise.
  • College is no longer a golden ticket - fees continue to increase, student debt is debilitating many youth, underemployment after graduation is significant and many degrees have no clear path to earning a good living.
  • Technological progress is automating entire job categories, workplace readiness of college graduates is falling and companies struggle to find people with the skills they really need and will pay big bucks for.

If you want to stop worrying about your child's future, and have confidence that you're providing what they uniquely need to succeed in life, this class is for you.

Over 5 weekly sessions starting Monday, January 23, 2017, we’ll cover subject matter including:

  • What do you really want for your child? What does success look like?
  • Why school isn’t enough anymore – the future of work, skills, education, adding value, disruption in education.

  • Future Skills – understanding and assessing the soft skills identified by countless experts as being critical to thriving in our rapidly changing world.
  • A Hacker's mindset - use education for your own ends, once you know what they are.
  • Connect to the Real World - help your student escape the academic bubble asap.
  • Creating Your Action Plan - and start doing now.
  • Great Ideas for Action - at home and at school.
  • Changing and Adjusting your help as your child grows and develops.

We'll give you high quality sources, additional reference materials, so you can go as deep as you like.

And while this course is focused on you, the parent, it can’t succeed without your child!

1. All the materials are able to be shared with your student (you decide what's appropriate for their age).

2. We’ve included easy prompts for you to use to spark conversations with your child, and get them thinking about their learning with you.

Each week will include:

  • A video introduction to the material

“Students who only know how to perform well in today’s education system—get good grades and test scores, and earn degrees—will no longer be those who are most likely to succeed.

Thriving in the twenty-first century will require real competencies, far more than academic credentials.”

Two years ago, I heard Pavan Arora, Director of Content at IBM WATSON describe the “cognitive computing” era we’re entering - where knowledge is a commodity, and technology is going to change the world in evermore amazing ways: helping cancer researchers find DNA markers in days/months, rather than years, for example. As example upon example stacked up, it became clear to me that there’s going to be an even bigger divide between low skilled, high substitute jobs, and highly paid, high skilled jobs – as more innovations replace human labor with technology. It made me look at my own children’s education in a new light.

My kids are 10, 10 and 13 – what can I do for them? Formal education isn't helping them much when it comes to developing high value skills, and it’s clear that a college degree doesn't necessarily translate into rewarding or lucrative work.

After watching, reading and researching learning and education over the past two years, notably Ken Robinson, Ted Dintersmith, Tony Wagner, Sugata Mitra, Will Richardson, (and countless others), I know that the ideas and solutions are available! I've collected the best sources and write about them regularly at Parents for Future Skills and on Linkedin.

My courses are for those parents – and their kids – who aren’t willing to trust that school will be enough to ensure success (it won't). I'm committed to helping single parents, working parents, and/or homeschooling parents willing to spend a bit of time thinking and planning and having fun, to help their kids grow, succeed and lead long, happy, fulfilled lives – which is what we all want in the end!
